Study Abroad in France

All French majors (and minors) are encouraged to spend a year or a semester in France. For more information, contact Dr. Charles McCreary, 435 Sutton Hall, 724-357-2707.

The department also offers these study abroad programs:

French Studies Summer Program

This summer program is broad enough to accommodate students from Intermediate French through the advanced level. Graduating high school seniors with a strong background in French will be considered upon recommendation by their teachers. French teachers, too, have participated and have found that this program is an excellent way for them to revitalize their contact with the French language and culture at a very reasonable price.

All classes meet between 9:00 a.m. and noon, and between 1:30 and 4:00 in the afternoon. Every participant is expected to take a minimum of three courses. More courses can be taken with the approval of the program director. A placement test is given at the beginning of the program to advise the student as to which level of instruction is best suited to their needs.

The Partners Summer Program

With the cooperation of the University of Nancy, the International University Partners program makes it possible for those who are not necessarily students of the French language to have a study-abroad experience in France under very favorable conditions.

Partners courses are all taught in English by experienced faculty members from Pennsylvania’s institutions of higher education. Each course grants three credit hours.

Partners Program, three weeks (three credits)

  • $2850 — IUP undergraduates/residents
  • $2,900 — IUP graduates/Pennsylvania residents
  • $3,300 — Out of state

French Studies

  • Six weeks (six credits)
  • $3,300 — IUP undergraduates
  • $3,800 — Out of state

The University of Nancy is situated at the crossroads of Europe with easy access to Paris, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and Switzerland. Students will participate in numerous educational field trips and excursions to such locations as Paris, Strasbourg, Alsace, and Champagne.
