Experience and Interests
Dr. John McCarthy came to the IUP Counseling Department in Fall 2001 and was promoted to professor in Fall 2008. He has directed the Center for Counselor Training and Services since its inception in 2005.
In the Counseling program, he frequently teaches “COUN 637: Counseling Theory;” “COUN 634: Mental Health Appraisal;” and “COUN 637: Group Counseling.” He also has taught electives on cognitive therapy, solution-oriented counseling, and counseling issues in adolescence.
His interests include cognitive therapy, professional help-seeking attitudes and behaviors, motivational interviewing, and adolescent depression.
Dr. McCarthy serves on the board of directors of the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE), a corporate affiliate of the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). He also completed the motivational interviewing “Trainer of New Trainers” in 2006. During the 2009-2010 academic year, Dr. McCarthy will participate in the International Academic Fellowship Program (AFP) in the Higher Education Support Program (HESP) of the Open Society Institute. In this role, he will be consulting with the Department of Psychology at Yerevan State University in Armenia.
