Dr. John McCarthy came to the IUP Counseling Department in Fall 2001. He has directed the department’s Center for Counselor Training and Services since its inception in 2005.

Since Fall 2009, Dr. McCarthy has participated in the International Academic Fellowship Program in the Higher Education Support Program of the Open Society Institute. In this role, he works with the Department of Psychology at Tbilisi State University in the Republic of Georgia. Prior to that, he consulted in Armenia. In addition, he has offered professional presentations in Turkey, Ukraine, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, England, Canada, and Taiwan.

Dr. McCarthy serves as chair for the Ambassadors of the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Foundation, the mission  of which is to “ leverage the power of counseling by strategically focusing resources for positive change.”

During the Spring 2011 semester, he served as an academic visitor at the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge (U.K.).

He has also completed the Master Training of Trainers for the Mental Health Facilitator program in 2012.

His interests include international issues in counseling, adolescent depression, wellness and creativity, and motivational interviewing.
