Dr. John McCarthy came to the IUP Counseling Department in fall 2000. He has directed the department’s Center for Creativity and Change since its inception in 2005.

Since fall 2009, Dr. McCarthy has participated in the International Academic Fellowship Program in the Higher Education Support Program of the Open Society Institute. In this role, he works with the Direction of Psychology at Tbilisi State University in the Republic of Georgia. Prior to that, he consulted in Armenia. In addition, he has offered professional presentations in Turkey, Singapore, Ukraine, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, England, Canada, and Taiwan. 

Dr. McCarthy serves as chair for the Ambassadors of the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Foundation.

His interests include international issues in counseling; wellness; creativity; solution-focused approaches; and motivational interviewing.
