Experience and InterestsDr. Laura Marshak

I joined the Department of Counselor Education in 2006. Prior to this, I was a professor in the Rehabilitation program that was part of the Department of Communication Disorders, Special Education, and Disability Services. Changing departments (as a result of the closure of my previous one) brought wonderful opportunities to collaborate with new colleagues and to engage in collaborative projects. Along with these opportunities, my most recent book, A School Counselor’s Guide to Helping Students with Disabilities, was developed along with Dr. Dandeneau and Dr. L’Amoreaux.

During the past five years, I have been quite immersed in working with couples raising children with disabilities and illnesses. Since writing Married with Special Needs Children (a couple’s guide to keeping connected) with Fran Prezant, I have spoken at many support groups and disability organizations on this topic. This includes groups serving parents of children with Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, and many other developmental disabilities such as William syndrome or Phelan McDermid.

In addition to being a professor in the Counseling Department, I provide individual and couples therapy at North Hills Psychological Services P.C. I cofounded this with a close friend and my first counseling professor from graduate school. One of my special interests in the private practice is to work with parents of children with disabilities. In 2006, I was lucky enough to be asked to be the professional advisor for the Friendship Circle (of Pittsburgh). This is an inclusion group whose mission is dedicated to helping children and young adults with special needs to become more fully integrated into the broader community. Since 1994, Friendship Circles have been created in more than 60 cities around the world.

Overall, more information about my activities can be found at my website.

These activities can be found under the What’s New? link on the website. There are links to recent work, including webinars and interviews.
