Professional Experience and Interests

Dr. Belch’s interest in working in student affairs began as an undergraduate where she served as a resident assistant and designed an internship in graduate admissions. While pursuing a master’s degree at Bowling Green State University, she was an assistant hall director at the University of Toledo (Ohio). Upon completion of her degree, she worked as an assistant dean in residence at Siena College (N.Y.), where she also held a quarter-time appointment in the counseling center. In 1984 Dr. Belch accepted a position as assistant dean of Students/director of Student Activities at Babson College (Mass.). During her four years at Babson College, Dr. Belch served as director of Orientation, assistant to the vice president, and associate dean of students.

She pursued an interest in teaching when she returned to Bowling Green State University in 1988 to work on a doctoral degree. In 1991 she accepted a position as an assistant professor and coordinator of the college student personnel program at Southern Illinois University–Carbondale. After two years at SIU–C, Dr. Belch accepted a position at Arizona State University in 1993 coordinating the research and evaluation efforts in student affairs.

With a strong desire to return to the faculty role, Dr. Belch joined the SAHE department as a faculty member in 1999. Her research interests focus on the recruitment and retention of entry-level housing professionals, students with disabilities, and the issues and concerns of middle managers in student affairs. Dr. Belch has published several journal articles in leading publications in our field and authored chapters in both the NASPA Monograph series and the New Directions for Student Services series. She was a guest editor of a New Directions for Student Services sourcebook on students with disabilities (Jossey-Bass), has served on the editorial board of the Journal of College Student Development and the NASPA Journal Editorial Board. Currently, she is an associate editor of ACPA’s Books and Media Board (ACPA). Dr. Belch has been an invited presenter at the Postsecondary Disability Institute, ACUHO-I’s National Convention, the NACA National Convention, and the MACUHO Regional Conference.
