Professional Experience and Interests

Dr. Mueller’s professional experience in student affairs began in residence life at Illinois State University (ISU), preceded by his undergraduate and graduate experiences in ISU’s residence halls. From central Illinois, Dr. Mueller moved to the east coast and continued his career in residence life at Temple University, SUNY–Stony Brook, and at Teachers College of Columbia University. During the final year of his doctoral program, Dr. Mueller joined the Teachers College higher education faculty as a full-time instructor and co-coordinator of the Student Personnel Administration master’s program. Upon completion of his Ed.D. in Higher Education in 1999, Dr. Mueller joined the SAHE faculty at IUP.

In addition to his professional employment experiences in student affairs, Dr. Mueller has been active in national, regional, and campus service. He has served in a variety of leadership roles within the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), including the directorate of the Standing Committee for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Awareness; the Core Council for Membership Services and Interests; ACPA Awards chairperson; chairperson of the Commission for Professional Preparation; and the 1995 and 2009 convention program committees. Dr. Mueller has presented at numerous ACPA conferences and for several of ACPA’s professional development “road shows” on cultural diversity, campus violence, and lesbian/gay/bisexual issues on campus. Dr. Mueller is currently working with a team of scholars and practitioners across the country to more deliberately promote inclusion in ACPA through professional development and scholarly activities. Dr. Mueller is an active member in IUP’s Safe Zone program and served as chair of IUP’s Commission on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues. He also serves on the campus judicial board and has served as the faculty advisor to the Catholic Student Association and currently serves as the faculty advisor for the Associates for Student Development and the Secular Student Alliance.

Dr. Mueller’s primary research, writing, and training interests are in multicultural competence and in social identity development. His most recent research projects have been on heterosexual identity development and the experiences of atheist college students. He recently co-edited an ACPA monograph titled “Reflections on the 75th Anniversary of the Student Personnel Point of View.” Dr. Mueller values including SAHE students and alumni in his scholarly activities and has published and presented with a number of them over the years. Dr. Mueller's editorial board work includes ACPA’s Books and Media Board, the College Student Affairs Journal, and the Journal of College Student Development.

Outside of SAHE, Dr. Mueller is a budding musician, playing the guitar and learning piano. He also sings with the Renaissance City Choir (Pittsburgh’s gay and lesbian chorus). When he is not tending to his dog and three cats, he enjoys home improvement projects and turning “trash to treasure.”
