Transfer Students

Realizing that the first semester at a new college sets the tone for all future semesters, we have created the IUP Transfer Orientation program to ensure that students begin their semester at IUP positively.

The IUP Tranfer Orientation program was developed to ensure that that transfer students begin their semester at IUP with accurate information about policies, resources, and supports and to ensure that transfer students are advised and registered for appropriate coursework for the first semester at IUP. Orientation also provides students with their first advising session with a faculty member from their department or college and registration.

Our program allows students to become familiar with the campus and some of its services before beginning the semester. Because we have found that students are not always the best predictors of the levels of classes in which to begin, for selected majors (Business, Safety Sciences, and Natural Sciences and Mathematics) we have developed our math placement testing program to provide students with the information to register for appropriate courses, if they are not transferring in the required math course or its immediate predecessor.

Orientation offers a basic overview of IUP academic policies and opportunities and services for students, for both students and parents. Our trained staff consists of current students and faculty and staff members who particularly enjoy working with transfer students. Join us this for this educational program tailored to meet the needs of entering transfer students.

The Transfer Student Orientation Program Includes:

  • An introduction to the Liberal Studies program
  • An explanation of Transfer Credit evaluations
  • Overview of transfer specific financial aid and work-study information
  • Placement testing in mathematics, as needed/required
  • Meetings with college-designated faculty advisers
  • An overview of judicial and campus safety information
  • Registration and completion of semester schedule of courses
  • Lunch
  • A residence hall living experience (optional, if desired)
  • Seminars* on topics such as the IUP Haven Project, IUP computing and resources, and Broaden Your Horizons
*Availability of workshops subject to group size and orientation date

When is Transfer Student Orientation?

  • For Fall admits, Transfer Orientation program dates are typically once a month in late May, June, and July. For Spring semester admits, Transfer Orientation program dates are typically in December and January.
  • Students select an Orientation date based on various considerations, including, but not limited to, admission category and date of tuition deposit. Enrollment materials will outline how a date change may be easily requested. Changes made within the timeframe specified in the letter of invitation should be able to be accommodated

Note: Attendance at earlier dates is most desirable for course registration. Once capacity for a session is reached, it will become unavailable.

The Transfer Orientation programs run from as early as 7:15 a.m. (if placement tests are required) until 5:00 p.m. Attendance is required, and it is only through the program that students are registered for their courses.

Students will be mailed information about how to enroll for Orientation in mid-October for Spring semester entrants and mid-February for Fall semester entrants. Invitations to Orientation are sent first to those who have paid tuition deposits. Attendance at the earliest date available is always desirable. Since students can only register for Orientation dates for which there are openings, confirmation mailing are sent the week prior to the actual Orientation date attendance.

Due to limited resources, there are no parent orientations for January transfer admits. Parents of students entering in a Fall semester will receive their own mailing about the optional Parent Orientation on the same schedule as Fall entrance students.
