A Search Conducted by the Tree Awareness Coalition Committee of Welcome to Indiana
Following a six-month search, the Tree Awareness Coalition of the Welcome to Indiana group identified what its members believe are the biggest trees of seventeen species in Indiana County. One hundred trees were nominated by people from all areas of the county. Circumference of a tree was made four-and-a-half feet above the ground and the value then divided by 3.1416 to get the diameter of the tree. The diameter was then multiplied by a species-specific number (i.e. White oak: 5) established by the International Society of Arboricultural, which gave the tree’s approximate age in years.
