B.S. Applied Physics

Applied Physics

The Applied Physics Program consists of a core of basic courses in mathematics, physical science, and computer technology.

The program is heavily oriented toward a hands-on, practical approach using computers for data acquisition in the laboratory. Students are encouraged to pursue independent research projects.

There are five tracks within the Applied Physics Program: biology, chemistry, computer science, geology, and solid state electronics. Students in the program will choose one track for their course of study. Each track offers additional courses and laboratory work in that area. The applied physics program is unique in that it offers the student the opportunity to study in an interdisciplinary field in science, obtaining the course work needed to enter a number of related work fields or graduate programs. As a result of this diversity, the program is academically strong and will require the student to work diligently to succeed. The potential rewards, however, are substantial.

If you have been interested in pursuing a career in computers, the physical or biological sciences, geology, or engineering, you may wish to consider this program as an alternative. The emphasis of this program is directed towards applications and the preparation for entry positions into industry.

Depending upon the track of studies pursued, graduates of this program will obtain the technical background to enter careers in materials and electronic device development, biotechnology, environmental studies, computer development, applied geophysics, and numerous others. Job prospects will be somewhat dependent upon economic conditions at the time you graduate.

For more information about course requirements see the B.S. in Applied Pyhsics section of the undergraduate course catalog.
