Alice Paul House

The Alice Paul House, located in Indiana, offers services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crime. They are seeking individuals who want to volunteer to help the victims. Alice Paul House provides a free training course that all volunteers must go through. Volunteering would include answering the twenty-four-hour crisis hotline, providing assistance with child care, empowering victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other crimes to help themselves. After training, volunteers are responsible for three four-hour hotline shifts a month.

Ark of Learning (Salvation Army)

The Arc of Learning Program, a tutoring program located at and run by the Indiana Salvation Army at 635 Water Street in Indiana, is looking for volunteers to tutor. All of the tutors are volunteers, many of whom are current IUP students. This semester there are many children who require tutoring; however, many have been placed on a waiting list due to the limited availability of our current volunteers.

The Arc of Learning Program requires volunteers to commit at least one hour per week to tutor any child grade K-12 in any subject for the duration of the semester. Tutoring is not in session when Indiana County is not in session or when IUP is closed for breaks.

American Language Institute

The American Language Institute (ALI), located in room 208 in Eicher Hall on campus, is seeking individuals who want to help international students learn English in America. It is important for the volunteer to have an understanding of different cultures and language learning but not necessarily. The volunteering is called "open lab," which is a tutoring session in the format of one-to-one interaction in English.

Beacon Ridge

Beacon Ridge, located at 1515 Wayne Avenue in Indiana, is looking for assistance with activities in their Activities Department. Volunteers interested must get along well with others in order to work with their generic population.

Birthright of Indiana County, Inc.

Birthright, located at 271 Philadelphia Street in Indiana, is looking to train staff counselors to support help support women through unplanned pregnancies, answer crisis calls, and welcome and care for walk-ins. Computer skills are needed to complete the job, and volunteers must be able to commit to at least three hours a week.

Center For Family Life

1. The Center For Family Life, located at 125 N. 5th Street in Indiana, is looking for volunteers to greet families that come to the center for supervised visits as well as providing child care during nurturing parenting classes and support groups. Knowledge in child development is preferred. Volunteers are needed Tuesday mornings for groups, Wednesday evenings for classes, evenings to greet families, and Saturday to greet families.

2. The Center for Family Life is also looking for volunteers to do some manual labor, such as painting and moving items, as well as clerical work such as answering phones. Volunteers are needed at any time from 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

Citizens’ Ambulance Service

Citizens’ Ambulance Service, located on 805 Hospital Road in Indiana, is looking for volunteers to assist with mailing and processing returned subsciptions for membership to Citizens’ Ambulance Service. This opportunity lasts from February 2012 to April 2012.

Chevy Chase Community Center

Chevy Chase Community Center is looking for volunteers to deliver lunches now until August 16, 2012. Volunteers are needed Monday–Friday from 11:00 a.m.–1:30 p.m. Volunteers must provide their own transportation.

Communities at Indian Haven

Communities at Indian Haven, located on 1675 Saltsburg Avenue in Indiana, is looking for volunteers to play musical instruments, play games with, and sing for groups within. Volunteers must be friendly, outgoing, positive, and able to read and write.

First Unitarian Universalist Church

The First Unitarian Universalist Church is a liberal, progressive, religious community seeking assistants for their children’s education program. One hour of prep and two hours of class time each week on Sunday mornings from 10:00 a.m. until noon, for forty hours per semester. The classes follow the IUP semester schedule, with the first service beginning on September 19.

Hopeful Hearts

Hopeful Hearts, located at 728 Church Street in Indiana, is a nonprofit organization that works to help grieving children, adolescents, and their families. Hopeful Hearts is looking for volunteers to help out with daily operations of a nonprofit organization.

Indiana Community Garden

The Indiana Community Garden, at the corner of S. 6th Street and Carter Avenue in Indiana, is seeking students interested in volunteering and assisting with our community garden project. Students may volunteer to assist in the following areas:

  • Gardening and landscaping (physical labor - digging, cultivating, raking, planting, watering, etc.)
  • Building and constructing garden plots, a tool shed and rain collecting device.
  • Advertising
  • Fundraising

Indiana County Humane Society

The Indiana County Humane Society, located at 65 Haven Drive in Indiana, is looking for volunteers to help in various ways with animals. Hours are very flexible, and help is always needed! Come help clean, play with cats, or take dogs on walks! This is an ongoing volunteer opening.

Indiana Free Library

The Indiana Free Library, located on 845 Philadelphia Street in Indiana, is looking for a volunteer shelver. You’ll play an important role in helping the library better serve its patrons. Duties include shelving materials in the proper place in the library, checking the shelves to ensure that they are in order, and sorting carts of materials to be shelved. Must be at least sixteen years of age; confident with arranging English-language materials alphabetically and numerically; able to push and pull moderately heavy loads and to kneel, bend, climb, and stretch frequently; detail oriented, precise, reliable, responsible, and able to work independently.

Training is provided, and student must be willing to commit to at least a full term (Fall semester, Spring semester, or Summer session) of volunteer service by working from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. one or two days a week (excluding Fridays and Sundays).

Indiana Players, Inc.

Indiana Players Inc., located on 725 Philadelphia Street in Indiana, is looking for help with box office ticket sales, ushers to assist patrons, stage crew to set and change the stage for scenes, and with other miscellaneous duties as needed such as costuming, make-up, costume changes, etc. Volunteers must be proficient in math, enjoy working with the public, and willing to work hard and get dirty as well as clean up.

Volunteers are needed on Saturdays to help clean up, and on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for help with performances.

Indiana Regional Medical Center

The Indiana Regional Medical Center, located at 835 Hospital Road in Indiana, is looking for volunteers to drive the IRMC shuttle. The shuttle service provides a vital service to our patients by taking them to and from their vehicles. If you’re looking for an opportunity to give something back, then this is your chance to help those who need it. We are looking for daylight hours, but can be very flexible with scheduling.

IUP New Choices/New Options Career Development

IUP New Choices/New Options Career Development is in need of volunteer students or graduate students to help us teach computer basics to adults in Davis Hall on IUP campus. Volunteer would need to meet approximately 8–10 hours in total, five sessions from April to May for two hours each session. The specific dates and times are April 24 and 26 and May 3, 8, and 10 from 12:30–2:30 p.m. You will be engaging in hands-on instruction of the following:

  • Introduction to Windows
  • MS Word Toolsbars and Menus
  • Word Processing with MS Word
  • E-mail Basics
  • Internet Basics
  • Computer hardware and software basics
  • Insertion and editing of some graphics into documents
  • Introduction to MS Office applications (quick overview of Excel, Access and Powerpoint)

IUP Special Needs Activity Program (SNAP)

IUP SNAP, located in 239 Zink Hall on IUP Campus, is a physical activity program for children and adults with disabilities. Please visit the Special Needs Activity Program website for more information. No clearances needed.

The Jimmy Stewart Museum

The Jimmy Stewart Museum, located on 835 Philadelphia Street in Indiana, is looking for volunteers to assist their guests at the ticket booth and museum, as well as to help with other light duties. Volunteers should be friendly and well-spoken. This is an ongoing opportunity.

Lively Arts, Ovations!, located in Fisher Auditorium room 202, is looking for students who would be willing to usher for shows in Fisher Auditorium and Gorell Recital Hall. Ushers are asked to take tickets, distribute programs, and seat patrons. A list of show dates and descriptions can be found on the Ovations! website. Ushers are asked to wear a white button-up shirt and black dress pants. Ushers are asked to report on show nights at 6:45 p.m. and are free to leave at 8:15 p.m. Ushers can also stay for the entire performance if they wish. Ushers must also be assertive, friendly, and professional in appearance and conduct.

Moorehead House, a senior living community located at 116 Madison Circle in Indiana, is looking for volunteers at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. every Saturday in April. Volunteers are needed to call Bingo, bowl with the residents, etc.

MOPS—Mothers of Preschoolers

MOPS—Mothers of Preschoolers, located at the First Assembly of God on 2707 West Pike Rd. in Indiana, is in need of caring people who enjoy children to help with childcare during onsite meetings. These meetings will be held every other Wednesday from September 28 to May 2012, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. Children will be infants to five years of age, and second and fourth grades.

PA CareerLink of Indiana County

The PA CareerLink of Indiana County, located at 300 Indian Springs Road in Indiana, is looking for assistants to help customers in the career resource area, direct incoming walk-in and phone traffic, do general filing and clerical work. Requirements and skills are computer navigation, and be able to provide friendly customer service.

Salvation Army—Ark of Learning Program

The Ark of Learning Tutoring Program at the Salvation Army, located at 635 Water Street in Indiana, is a free service offered to all students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade in all subjects. We are currently tutoring on Monday through Thursday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Each session is a one-on-one session with an IUP student and lasts for one hour. We try to match up IUP students that are majoring in the subject area that the student needs tutoring in so that they have the best chance of succeeding in that subject.

St. Bernard’s Regional Catholic School

St. Bernard’s Regional Catholic School is looking for before- and after-school help. Participants in this program can either volunteer their time or be paid through federal work study. You would tutor the children, read to them, coordinate activities, etc. The students are in elementary school. St. Bernard’s needs people for before school, 7:45–9:00 a.m., and after school, 3:00–5:30 p.m., Monday–Friday. You would pick a few times a week that work best in your schedule. St. Bernard’s is looking for people immediately and for next semester. In order to participate, you will need your Pennsylvania criminal background check, Pennsylvania child abuse clearances, and your own transportation. (FBI background check for out-of-state residents in lieu of Pennsylvania background).

The United Way of Indiana County, located at 982 Philadelphia Street, is looking for volunteers in several skill areas to help with several special events. It also has a need for volunteers to help assemble mailing packets, make non-sales telephone calls/e-mails, and, if possible run errands locally in Indiana County only. Skills needed for the job include an ability to use office equipment, such as a fax machine and copier, and good communication skills by way of telephone, e-mail, etc. Hours are variable.

VNA Family Hospice and Palliative Care

The VNA, located at 850 Hospital Road Suite 3000 in Indiana, is looking for volunteers to keep patients company, run errands, read to patients, write letters, play games, encourage patients to tell their life story. Volunteers also work in the office and help with bereavement follow-up with families.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, have a valid driver's license. 20 hours of training provided. Work will be done in the office and at patients homes and facilities in Indiana County. Two to four hours a week desired.

Indiana County YMCA

The Indiana County YMCA, located on 60 North Ben Franklin Road in Indiana, has volunteer opportunities for students looking to get involved in the Indiana community. There are a variety of opportunities available, many of which will last throughout the school year. These include:
