Step 1
Requirements for Admission to IUP Teacher Education Program
- A minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average after 48 earned credits
- Successful completion of Praxis I Exams (PPST) with a minimum score established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education
- Completion of the following courses with a grade of “C” or higher:
- ENGL 101 (ENG 101)
- ENGL 121 (ENG 115)
- EDSP 102 (PSY 201)
- COMM 103 (EDU 202)
- Six credits in Mathematics (MAT 107 and MATH 152)
- Act 34 and Act 151 clearances
- Completion of speech, hearing, and TB test
- Satisfactory completed essay
- Reviewed evidence of starting an electronic portfolio
- Advisor’s recommendation and signature
- Proof of professional liability insurance
- Completion of these requirements by the end of the sophomore year will result in admission to IUP’s Teacher Education Program.
Step 2
Requirements for Admission to Student Teaching
- Successful completion of Step 1
- Maintenance of a 3.0 GPA
- Successful completion of Praxis II exams (The Praxis cut-off score for each test must be at or above the current PDE established score at the time a candidate applies for Pennsylvania Teacher Certificate.)
- Act 34 and Act 151 clearances (annual update required)
- Proof of professional liability insurance
- Completion of all required professional education and majors courses (PSY 201, EDU 204, EDUC 342, EDSP 477, EDUC 442, PSY 210, ENG 117, ELED 222, CFS 202, ECED 312, ELED 312, ELED 313, ELED 257, ELED 357, ELED 411, ELED 425, EDUC 499), and liberal studies science courses (PHY 100, PHS 101, BIO 133) with a grade of “C” or higher.
- Update electronic portfolio.
- Advisor’s recommendation and signature
- Completion of these requirements will result in eligibility for student teaching placement.
Step 3
Requirements for Graduation and Pennsylvania Teacher Certification
- Successful completion of Step 2
- Successful completion of student teaching
- Maintenance of 3.0 cumulative GPA
- Final passage of the Electronic Professional Portfolios
- Completed application for graduation
- Completed application for Pennsylvania Teacher Certification
- Advisor’s recommendation and signature
- IUP Teacher Certification officer’s recommendation and signature
