How to Plan a Successful Event

What follows are general guidelines for planning an Indiana University of Pennsylvania event. We recognize that all events are unique and thus will have different needs, but all events should go through the same basic step-by-step planning whether the event is a first-time event or celebrating its one-hundredth year. Events just don’t happen—they are carefully thought-out plans requiring diligent focus and demanding, detailed work.

The following information is designed to be a guide to help in the process and to assist those who have been given the responsibility of planning an event.

Event Design and Development
Get a binder and begin to establish a timeline based on the date of your event. Often it is easier to work backwards beginning with the date of the event.

Summary of questions you should ask in the beginning stages of planning an event. Remember the key to proper planning is detailed organization!

Once you know that an event is to take place, a planning committee needs to be organized.

Events Survival Kit
You may need some or all of these items during the event.
Displaying the American Flag
You may be asked to display an American Flag during an event. It is important to treat the flag with respect and display it properly at all times.
Measure the Event’s Success
Did your plan work? Did you sit down with your planning committee and discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly about your event?
