The American Language Institute offers full-time, noncredit programs of intensive English for international students and visitors. Please contact the ALI for application and admission requirements. If admitted, each international student will be issued an immigration document from the ALI.
- English for Academic Purposes: Programs for non-native speakers of English who need preparation in English before starting degree programs at IUP or other U.S. colleges and universities. EAP is a ten-week program in the summer and a fourteen-week program in the Fall and Spring semesters.
- English for Specific Purposes: Programs for international students who expect to begin graduate degree programs at IUP or elsewhere. ESP programs are used to improve students’ ability to communicate in English about their specific fields of study.
- English for Visitors: Noncredit courses for tourists, short-term exchange students, and groups of visiting business and professional people for any four-week period during the summer, as needed.
Only those with high school diplomas or their equivalent are considered for enrollment. The American Language Institute has cooperative arrangements with IUP as well as other colleges and universities throughout Pennsylvania and the region to admit academically qualified foreign students on the condition that they successfully complete the appropriate ALI-intensive program. Enrollment in the institute does not constitute admission to IUP degree programs.
An applicant to an ALI program should send a completed application form and a $100 non-refundable application fee. All fees must be paid in the form of an international money order or check drawn on a United States bank and are subject to change without notice.
