Preview Content

Before you submit your content for approval (publication), it’s a good idea to view it in preview mode to make sure it looks the way you intended.

You cannot tell what your finished product will look like while viewing content in the Workarea or while editing it. For example, an image may extend beyond the borders of the web page, lines of type may break in unexpected places, or an image you used may be covering some of your type.

To see how your content will look on the live site, you need to view it in preview mode. The Web Team recommends that you do this before submitting your content for approval.

Note: Enter your content into a menu before you attempt to view it in preview mode. All HTML content should be included in a menu. Placement on a menu also allows you to navigate to your content and preview it more easily. See How to Work with Menus for more information.

To use preview mode, follow this process:

  1. After you are finished editing your content, click the Checkin icon, checkin_icon.png, on the top toolbar. (Checking in your content makes it accessible to others with editing privileges on your site but does not move the content into the workflow.)

  2. Go to the browser view (the one in which you're logged in). You should see the following buttons.

  3. Click Preview. You will notice that the green arrow turns red and faces left.

  4. Then use the menu to navigate to your content and view it as it will appear on the site. You will notice that, while in preview mode, content-block outlines do not appear.

  5. Once you have viewed your content in preview mode, go back and open it for editing. When you are finished, preview it again if you have made changes or submit it for approval.

  6. To exit preview mode, go back to the browser view, and click Preview again. The arrow will turn green and face right. You will notice that only published content is now visible and the content-block outlines will appear.

Note: Content items that you have added through Metadata, such as collections, ViewMaster slideshows, Learn More blocks, etc., will not appear in preview mode until the content item to which they were added has been published. ViewMaster slide shows and Learn More blocks also need to be approved before they appear in the browser, whether in regular or preview mode.
