The Aid Application Process Checklist

Applying for Financial Aid:

1. You’ll need a Federal Student Aid PIN to file your FAFSA.
2. Submit a completed FAFSA by the priority deadline: April 15 each year for incoming freshmen, current students, and transfers. The FAFSA also serves (for Pennsylvania residents) as a PHEAA grant application, so you’ll also meet the PHEAA deadline of May 1.
3. Double-check: Is your Social Security number correct on the form?
4. Review scholarship opportunities. Scholarships are not offered via the FAFSA.
5. Respond promptly to any request for verification of the information on your FAFSA. Otherwise, your financial aid won’t be processed.
6. Check your financial aid status regularly in your URSA account: You'll see requests for verification or further information, and your aid award will be displayed when it’s available.

Once You're Awarded:

1. Complete all outstanding Master Promissory Note (MPN) and entrance counseling requirements for any Federal Direct Stafford Loans you’ve been awarded.
2. Complete a separate MPN for any Federal Perkins Loans awarded.
3. Have your parent apply for a Federal Direct PLUS Loan every year they wish to be considered for the loan. Make sure your parent borrower also completes the eMPN if they are credit approved.
4. Are you a grad student? You may apply for a Graduate PLUS Loan if you need additional funds.
5. Review alternative loans on ELM Select if needed, and complete applications.
6. Keep your mailing address up-to-date in your URSA account, and check your IUP e-mail account regularly, so you don’t miss important notifications.
