National Broadcasting Society

The IUP chapter of the NBS is a professional organization for students with career interests in broadcasting and electronic media. The chapter sponsors professional activities such as media field trips and professional speakers at chapter meetings. Students also network with media professionals at the society’s regional and national conventions. NBS national conventions are held each year in major media markets such as New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and Atlanta.  In addition, students have the opportunity to compete for national scholarships and production and scriptwriting awards.

IUP’s chapter of NBS has twice been recognized as National Chapter of the Year. Individual student members of the chapter have received national and regional officer and production awards. Former chapter members have served as national student vice president and coordinator of the NBS national production competition. The IUP NBS chapter’s former advisor, Dr. B. Gail Wilson, received National Member of the Year and National Advisor of the Year awards.

Alpha Epsilon Rho is the national honor society affiliated with NBS and is a recognition for NBS members who achieve academic excellence.

James Rose

James Rose (1990) is the vice president and station manager of the Emmy Award-winning King Broadcasting Company in Seattle. As an undergraduate student at IUP, Jim was vice president of public information and chapter president of IUP’s NBS chapter. He was recognized by NBS with the Richard Uray National Scholarship and two NBS National Production Awards.

“The IUP chapter of the National Broadcasting Society afforded me my first ‘real world’ networking experience with executives and professionals from the media industry,” said Rose. “Local, regional, and national conferences attracted companies from every facet of the business. These companies were not only looking to help educate the next generation, but to also recruit for their organizations. The contacts I made opened doors that would have otherwise been shut.”
