Internship Application

Internship Syllabus

What exactly is an internship?

An internship is an academic course offered to qualified students who want an experiential learning opportunity. The Criminology Department internship allows students to engage, full time (480 hours), in an approved work environment. Students get to apply their knowledge of criminology/criminal justice to the actual daily activities of a professional criminal justice agency.

Students are graded based upon their daily performance, the cooperating agency’s evaluation, and successful completion of required learning observation logs and a research paper. A total of 12 credits will be earned upon successful completion of the internship.

Who can do an internship?

Students who qualify for this opportunity must have a minimum of 57 college credits, with 18 of those credits from Criminology. Also, qualified students must have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5.

How do I go about getting an internship?

Follow the four-step process:

  1. Meet the minimum requirements:
    1. 57 college credits
    2. 18 Criminology credits
    3. 2.5 G.P.A.
  2. Schedule a meeting with the internship coordinator, Dr. Rosemary Gido or her graduate assistant:
    E-mail: rgido@iup.edu
    Phone: 724-357-2720
    Office: 202 Wilson
  3. Complete the agency’s internship interview process. This could include multiple interviews and background checks, depending on the organization. Dr. Gido schedules workshops each semester on how to prepare for interviews and conduct oneself professionally in the internship workplace.
  4. Once a student has been accepted by an agency for an internship, a letter of acceptance and a job description outlining the duties and responsibilities must be sent to Dr. Gido. This confirmation can be sent by mail or e-mail (or faxed to Dr. Gido at 724-357-4018).
