Tawny Holm earned her Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and Northwest Semitic Languages from The Johns Hopkins University in 1997 and began teaching at IUP in 1999, after having taught at DePauw University. Her scholarship deals with the Hebrew Bible, Aramaic studies, Early Judaism, and Ancient Near Eastern cultures, literature, and history. Her book, Of Courtiers and Kings: The Biblical Daniel Narratives and Ancient Story-Collections, is in press with Eisenbrauns. Moreover, a bilingual edition of ancient Aramaic literary texts is near completion for the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) series “Writings from the Ancient World” (WAW).
Her forthcoming SBL WAW volume is devoted to the Aramaic literature from Syro-Palestine and Egypt and includes an edition of Papyrus Amherst 63, which contains several different compositions and is written in Aramaic but with Demotic Egyptian script. In addition, she is working on a monograph on Ancient Aramaic literature (under contract with Walter de Gruyter). Thus, her current research is particularly focused on the Jewish and Aramean presence in Egypt in the Persian, Hellenistic, and Roman periods.
Her recent publications include “The Sheikh Fadl Inscription in Its Literary and Historical Context,” Aramaic Studies 5 (2007), and “The Fiery Furnace in the Book of Daniel and the Ancient Near East,” Journal of the American Oriental Society 128 (2008). Among her contributions in press are “Memories of Sennacherib in Aramaic Tradition” in Sennacherib at the Gates of Jerusalem (701 B.C.E.): Story, History and Historiography (edited by I. Kalimi and S. Richardson; Leiden: Brill); “Moses in the Prophets and the Writings of the Hebrew Bible” in Illuminating Moses: A History of Reception (edited by J. Beal; Leiden: Brill); and “Aramaic” in Handbook of Ancient Mesopotamia (edited by G. Rubio; Berlin: Walter de Gruyter). Electronic off-prints of some of her publications are available online.
Dr. Holm is the advising coordinator for the Department of Religious Studies and regularly teaches the following courses at IUP: Biblical Hebrew, Understanding the Bible, Archaeology and the Bible, Women in the Bible, Apocalypse and Beyond, and Islam.
