The Nursing Ph.D. program is offered at both the main campus and at the Dixon University Center in Harrisburg. Students must have a master’s degree in nursing or a related field. Submit the following items to the IUP School of Graduate Studies and Research for admission consideration:

  • Complete the application form online, or request a hard copy by e-mailing
  • Nonrefundable $50 application fee
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Signed and dated statement of career and academic goals: Identify your professional goals and research area of interest, a summation of your achievements within the field of practice, and a summary of your research abilities
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, including those institutions from which a degree was not earned
  • Nursing license
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • Recent, official GRE scores, including analytical writing. For information about taking the GRE at IUP, contact IUP’s Career Development Center by calling (724) 357-4994.

Completed applications are forwarded by the IUP School of Graduate Studies and Research to the Department of Nursing and Allied Health Professions for review. Selected applicants are invited by the Department of Nursing and Allied Health Professions for an interview.

Admission Requirements

Students seeking admission to the PhD program in Nursing must satisfy the minimum School of Graduate Studies and Research requirements and have a master’s degree in nursing or a related field. International students are required to comply with the admission criteria as outlined in the graduate catalog.

All applicants must also submit the following for review by the doctoral program committee:

  • Recent GRE Scores (including analytical writing)
  • Official Higher Education Transcripts
  • Nursing License
  • Current Curriculum Vitae
  • Writing Sample (Goal Statement)
  • Two Letters of Recommendation
  • Personal Interview

All items in the applicant’s application package will be evaluated by the doctoral program committee to provide a composite score for ranking of applicants to determine acceptance into the program.
