Biography

John Levey is assistant professor of Composition and Music Theory. He oversees the undergraduate theory and theory-skills curricula and teaches graduate courses in analysis. 

Dr. Levey completed a PhD in Composition and Music Theory as a Regents Fellow at the University of Michigan. He also holds a MM in Composition from the University of Michigan and a BM in composition from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Prior to his appointment at IUP, he served as assistant professor of Music at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, where he directed programs in music in interdisciplinary arts. 

Dr. Levey’s research focuses on art music of the 20th and 21st centuries, particularly serial and post-serial music. He has published in Music Analysis and is presently studying music by the late American composer Peter Lieberson. Performances of Dr. Levey’s compositions have taken place in venues such as the Aspen Music Festival, Harvard University, Boston College, and Music07 Festival.
