About the Graduate Scholars Forum

Students currently enrolled in any graduate program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania or who completed a graduate degree in December 2014 are eligible to submit a proposal to present recently completed or ongoing research or creative works. All submissions must include the name and e-mail address of a faculty sponsor who will attest to the quality of the work. Please note that research done in collaboration with faculty or practicing professionals is eligible for submission as long as the student has played a substantial role in the research.

Forum Information

All students, faculty, and the general public are invited to attend. Students have the opportunity to see scholarly work in their disciplines, learn how to present their own work at a conference, get ideas for future research, support friends who are presenting, and satisfy a course requirement (attendance vouchers are available).

Students are required to have a faculty sponsor willing to provide guidance and support. The professor helps determine an appropriate topic, method, data source, etc. The faculty adviser does not have to be from the student’s department, though faculty members in the student’s major are the best resource to help guide a research project and to give advice on how a project will enhance the student’s future career goals. Students should speak with professors in their current classes and/or make an appointment to speak with the department chairperson. The chairperson knows all of the department faculty’s research interests and can provide a recommendation on who to ask.

The 2014 Graduate Scholars Forum had 112 student participants. These students shared their work in the form of posters (87), oral presentations (16), musical performances (1), and juried art exhibits (8). Faculty involvement was strong, with 67 faculty sponsors and judges.

Day of Event Information for Presenters

  • If you are presenting a poster, plan to arrive at the HUB between 7:45 a.m and 9:00 a.m. This will allow you time to register and set up your poster presentation. Plan to stay next to your poster from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon for the poster display and judging.
  • If you are giving an oral presentation, plan to arrive at the HUB at least 20 minutes before your scheduled session. This will allow you time to register, locate your presentation room, and ensure that all technical matters are in order.
  • If you are giving a performance, you will register at the HUB before proceeding to your performance location. Please allow enough time to register and arrive at the location for your scheduled presentation.

When you arrive at the HUB, you must stop at the registration table (near the front desk) to pick up your registration materials. Please remember to dress appropriately. You should wear professional attire. Jeans and t-shirts are not acceptable.

An awards presentation will be held during which the prize winners for each college will be announced. We hope that all participants will attend the awards ceremony. The time and location of the ceremony will be posted once the schedule is finalized.

Please encourage your faculty members, friends, and family to come to the forum; they will be impressed at the scope and professionalism of the presentations.

Lunch and refreshments are provided throughout the day.
