Geoscience Department More than Rocking

Geoscience, John Taylor '75 with students

The Geoscience Department at IUP is, indeed rocking, but you’ll find its students examining much more than rocks.

Guided by an active faculty that conducts a multitude of research, students in the department have opportunities for conducting hands-on study along with their professors and for research abroad. For example, two of the department’s students presented research at the American Geophysical Union in Fall, 2013.

Geoscience Department faculty members are part of IUP’s Sustainable Natural Resources Team, which works to solve energy-related issues in the region.

The department is well known for its planetarium and related outreach programming, but it also has  research facilities equipped to study marine sediments, paleontology,  geochemistry, structural geology and tectonics, and planetary science.

The department offers degrees in geology, environmental geology, energy resources, and earth and space science education.

Recently, Geoscience Department alumnus Tim Cejka ’73, and his wife, Debra Phillips Cejka ’73, supported the construction of a new science building for IUP students with a $1.25 million gift. Tim Cejka received IUP’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2006 and serves on the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Alumni Advisory Board.

In addition, a $28,000 anonymous gift, along with gifts and pledges from alumni and friends, established the Next Generation Field Geology Fund, which supports students in field study.

In the photo: Professor John Taylor '75, like all of his colleagues in Geoscience, spends a great deal of face-to-face time with students. Catch a glimpse of how today's Geoscience Department is preparing students for relevant careers.
