Why do I need an active I-Card to make Health Hut purchases and participate in the Lending Program?

Your I-Card is the official means of identification at IUP. We require that you present your I-Card at time of purchase because the Health Hut is a service for IUP students only. Health Hut is supported by the student Health and Wellness Fee. We are able to provide low and no-cost items because of this support.

Why do you supply sexual health items?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "youth ages 15-24 make up just over one quarter of the sexually active population, but account for half of the 20 million new sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that occur in the United States each year." Abstinence is the only form of birth control that is 100 percent effective in preventing pregnancy and the transmission of STIs. Unfortunately, we cannot sell abstinence at the Health Hut, but Health AWAREness provides free brochures on abstinence that are available at the window.

In our opinion, the next best step is to discuss STIs and sexual health with our college students so that they can make informed decisions on how to protect themselves from STIs and unplanned pregnancy. We provide sexual health items at the Health Hut so that students can practice safer sex, if they choose to engage in any form of sexual activity. For more information on sexual health, you can visit the Health AWAREness Sexual Responsibility page.

Can I get medicine at the Health Hut?

Unfortunately, at this time you cannot get medicine at the Health Hut. You may get medicine for colds at the Self-Care Cold Center, located in the Health Service lobby. You must sign in on the computer before going to the Self-Care Cold Center. After signing in, you check for the medicine that you need and go to the window. It is free, fast, and you get a form that shows you were in Health Service that day.

How can I make recommendations about products, lending equipment, and Health Hut operations?

We value your feedback! You can make recommendations by e-mailing health-hut@iup.edu, or by calling 724-357-4799.
