You have the option of following a thesis or non-thesis option within the program.

The courses for the Sociology MA program at IUP are as follows:

Required Courses (9 credits)

Research Seminar in Sociology (3 credits)
Contemporary Sociological Theory (3 credits)
Microcomputing Applications in Sociology (3 credits)

Thesis Option (6 credits)

Thesis (6 credits)
Approved Electives (21 credits total, including at least 9 credits in Area of Specialization)

Non-Thesis Option (27 credits)

Approved Electives (27 credits total, including at least 9 credits in Area of Specialization)

*Students also have the option of working with the program coordinator to create a specialization that fits their own interests and career plans.  A specialization enables you to select a combination of three to five courses (including courses from various other departments) focusing on a particular area of interest.  Courses may include the areas of Women's Studies, Clinical Psychology, Counselor Education, Criminology, Public Administration, Adult and Community Education, Political Science, Library Relations, and others.
