Research and Service Are Hallmarks of the IUP Psychology Department

Psychology Department, Lobby of Uhler Hall

Led by a faculty that is on the move, the IUP Psychology Department hosts the Center for Applied Psychology, which provides a psychological services to the community through clinical, educational, consultative, and research activities while providing a training ground for students enrolled in the clinical psychology doctoral program. And, that’s just scratching the surface!

More than 3,800 alumni have earned degrees from the department, which currently features an honors track in its bachelor's degree program and a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology.

Faculty members publish research in scholarly journals and are often sought as experts for mainstream news reporting. For example, Professor Maureen McHugh was quoted as a source in an article about bullying published by LiveScience, while Professor Raymond Pavloski frequently publishes on the theoretical model of visual gestalt. The department website's news section is indicative of active faculty members who freely share their knowledge with students, who are encouraged to participate in research projects. See this example of one undergraduate student's story about his hands-on research (he graduated and has gone off to pursue a Ph.D. in counseling psychology.)

The department, situated in Uhler Hall--which was refurbished in the late 1990s--facilitates brown-bag lunches and other opportunities that facilitate free discussion about professional issues, trends, and topics. It is a part of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Three alumni of the department have received the Distinguished Alumni Award: Edna McCutcheon, Thomas Kerstetter, and Mary Joan Willard.
