Someday, He Might Treat You: Aspiring Physician Thankful for Alumni Generosity

Cody Stewart came to IUP because of his involvement in the Upward Bound Math and Science Program for high school students. He currently works four jobs and is a strong student.

His mother died when he was young. His father is not in the picture. Cody is a biology major who plans to become a doctor. Those who know him also know he is mature and independent. He recognizes that future medical school expenses will add up, so he is trying to avoid incurring as much debt in his undergraduate years as he can.

The dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics awarded him a Dean’s Merit Scholarship to help defray his expenses and reward him for his tenacity and hard work. She was able to do this because she had at her disposal funds in the Foundation for IUP designated to the College of Natural Science and Mathematics. Cody also received a Biology Opportunities Scholarship, the Tomb Family Scholarship, and the Michael J. Supinka, Jr., Memorial Scholarship, all made possible by the generosity of alumni and friends who believe in the power of scholarships.

"The alumni who give back to IUP are great people. They are selfless in that act. They are giving up something that belongs to them to help students get to other places," Cody said. "To me, it means a lot."
