Collection Development Policy

Collection development is a process through which library faculty members identify the subject areas for which materials/data are to be collected, the depth and breadth of the subject areas to be collected, and the formats of materials/data to be collected, all within budget, availability, and compatibility constraints. Library faculty members assess the collection’s strengths and weaknesses, filling gaps where possible and weeding as needed. Library bibliographers are principally responsible for making purchase decisions for library materials and refining profiles for approval plan books. They work closely with department faculty liaisons and the Collection Development librarian. Library bibliographers disseminate information about the library to department faculty members, teach library instruction classes, and assist faculty members in making the best use of the library and associated information resources.
