Creating a Menu
A menu is generally considered the primary tool for navigating a website. A menu will already be created for your unit’s site. However, you will likely need to create additional menus to navigate to some of the content you add to your site.
To create a menu, you will need to be in the Content Management System (CMS) Workarea. Once you are there, follow this process:
- Select the folder you are creating the menu for on the left side of the Workarea.
- Mouse over the New tab
on the toolbar and scroll down to Menu.
- When the New Menu screen appears, enter a title for the menu and click on the Save icon (
). (Ignore the Advanced Settings prompt.) You have added a menu. To add items to the menu, see the directions below.
Adding Content to a Menu
You can edit or add items to a menu from either the CMS Workarea or the browser. To remain in the Workarea and add items to the menu you just created, follow this process:
- Mouse over the first-level menu you just created, and a pop-up menu appears (See below).
Note: If you do not see a folder icon to the left of your menu name, as pictured below, click on the menu name, and the folder should appear. Then mouse over the menu name.

- Click on Add in the pop-up, and the Add New Item screen appears.
- Choose Content Item, and click on the Next… button.
(Under the Add New Item screen, do not choose Sub Menu. You can assign a regular menu to any subfolder you have, and it will, in effect, be a submenu.)
- Navigate through the folder system to the content item you need to add to the menu. Select the content item by checking the box next to the title.
- Click on the Add icon (
) to add content to the menu, and repeat the process to add any other content items.
You can reorder content items for your menu by clicking Reorder on the pop-up menu that appears above.
Note: Your main content item should be first in order within the menu. For example, on the Web Team’s site, the How To ... section has its own menu. A content block explaining what this section is about is the first item in the menu. This content block appears when the site user clicks How To ... on the site menu. The rest of the How To ... items are then listed below that main, introductory content item on the menu.
