Personal Narrative:

Dr. Crystal Machado is an assistant professor in the Department of Professional Studies in Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), where she works with pre-service and in-service teachers and administrators. Additionally, she coordinates the Master’s in Education program. Prior to joining IUP, Crystal worked as a K-12 teacher, an administrator, and middle/high school assistant principal for many years in Pakistan. She holds a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership; two master’s degrees, one in School Administration and the other in Primary Education; and two bachelor’s degrees, one in Business and the other in Education.

Crystal demonstrates her commitment to promoting equitable practices in higher education through her teaching, research, and service. As an instructor, she models culturally responsive practices and critical pedagogy. Broadly speaking, her research revolves around organizational learning and empowerment. More specifically, she is interested in creating multicultural learning environments which promote high levels of student engagement, critical thinking, cross-cultural competence, and reflective practice.  She has presented on these topics at international, national, and regional conferences. 

Crystal reviews papers for the Journal of International Students: Multicultural Education; Journal of the International Association for the Study of the Global Achievement Gap; and Reflective Practice: International and Multidisciplinary Perspective, UK. At IUP she serves on the FDIIR and Judicial Boards. Additionally, she is a member of Safe Zone. She is currently serving as chairperson of a Reflective Practice Teaching Circle entitled Belonging, Learning, and Exploring New Directions (BLEND). BLEND provides women and faculty of color hired at IUP with access to a network of colleagues from a range of disciplines who can provide advice on instructional issues, career advancement, publishing, and social networking.
