Emma Berkey
HPED Graduate Assistant
I am originally from Shanksville, Pennsylvania. I ventured to Philadelphia to receive my undergraduate degree from Temple University in Athletic Training. I graduated with my degree in May 2012 and became a certified athletic trainer in the summer of 2012. I am now working on my master’s in Health and Physical Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. While I obtain my degree, I am working with Dr. Lorenzi as the graduate assistant for the Special Needs Activity Program (SNAP). I will graduate with my master’s degree and K-12 teaching certificate in December 2013. I then plan to pursue a career at the high school level as an athletic trainer and/or health and physical education teacher.

Nicole E. Knecht
I started my college career at CUNY Hunter College in New York and recently transferred to Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) to complete my degree in Nursing. While living in New York, I worked for various recreational programs for children and adults with special needs. These programs promoted being active, building self-esteem, positive reinforcement, socializing, and, most of all, having fun while participating in the various activities. A few of the programs were Project HAPPY (Hunter Activity Program for Parents and Youth), SNACK (Special Needs Activity Center for Kids), and Swim Works. For the past eight years, I have worked primarily in the capacity of swim instructor and certified lifeguard. Prior to my New York work experience, I was an assistant head lifeguard at a pool and lake in Pocono Mountain Water Forest. Working at these programs has been very rewarding. It brings me joy to witness the client’s progression in the water and seeing the happiness it brings them. Once I transferred to IUP, I knew I had to find a program that provided similar opportunities for children and adults, which led me to SNAP.
