Federal Pell Grant
Summer term: Only students who have not already received a full-time annual Pell Grant for the 2012–2013 academic year are eligible for a summer 2013 grant.
See more information on applying for a Pell Grant.
PHEAA State Grant
Summer term: A PHEAA summer grant is available to undergraduate students who are Pennsylvania residents. To apply, file a PHEAA State Grant Summer Application by August 15.
If you enroll half-time, the summer award will count as half an award toward your lifetime maximum of eight full-time PHEAA awards.
To be eligible, you must:
- Enroll at least half-time (six credits) for at least eight weeks. If you take six credits in just one of the two Summer sessions, you will not meet the minimum enrollment requirement.
- Take at least 50 percent of your summer credits in the classroom (online courses do not qualify as classroom taught).
- Meet PHEAA’s academic progress requirements. You must pass a minimum of 12 credits for each term that you receive a full-time PHEAA grant.
See more information on applying for a PHEAA grant.
Federal Direct Stafford Loan
Summer term: The maximum amount you can borrow is determined by subtracting the amount already borrowed during the Fall and Spring terms from your annual Stafford Loan limit. Generally, students use their annual maximum loan eligibility during the Fall and Spring and have no eligibility left for Summer.
If a subsidized Stafford Loan is disbursed before June 30, 2013, the interest rate is 3.4 percent.
See more information on applying for a Stafford Loan.
Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan
Summer term: To apply, the parent borrower must complete a summer PLUS Loan application.
See further information on applying for a Parent PLUS Loan.
Alternative/Private Student Loans
Summer term: If you are ineligible for Federal Direct Stafford Loans, you may consider an alternative loan.

Federal Work Study
Summer term: Students who have secured summer employment on campus or with an approved local community service organization (through the Office of Service Learning) can apply for FWS.
Eligibility is based on financial need and Summer cost of attendance.
Summer enrollment is not required. However, you must be enrolling for the upcoming Fall term, and a percentage of earnings will be counted as a financial aid resource for the upcoming academic year.
To be eligible, you must:
- Have a 2012–2013 FAFSA on file and, if you’re not enrolled during the summer, a 2013–2014 FAFSA on file.
- You must also submit the IUP Summer Federal Work Study Application.
