Student Rewarded for Elder Care

Allison Shumar

Pittsburgh resident Don Green has no link to IUP, other than through his late mother, 1927 Home Economics Education graduate Isabella Wilkinson Green. Nevertheless, he was inspired to assist students at her alma mater by establishing a scholarship in her name and that of Kathryn Cepull-Woleslagle, her lifelong friend, whom Green lovingly refers to as his aunt.

“I don’t have any connection whatsoever to IUP,” he said. “This is purely a tribute to my mother and my aunt.” Among other criteria, recipients of the scholarship must volunteer with the elderly or with homeless or abused animals. Green later chose to designate a charitable gift annuity to fund the Isabella Wilkinson-Green/Kathryn Cepull-Woleslagle Scholarship, which was established in 2005.

“I feel that anybody that gets something should give something back to society,” Green said. “I want to reward people who are doing something for others with regard to animals or the elderly, things that are important to me and my family.” Allison Shumar, now pursuing her master’s degree, received the Isabella Wilkinson-Green/Kathryn Cepull-Woleslagle Scholarship as an undergraduate. Shumar, who’s shown above, has worked with the elderly, especially an eighty-eight-year-old woman for whom she does odd jobs around the house and in the yard.

“This scholarship has definitely helped me a lot because I work two jobs just trying to pay for everything,” Shumar said. “The money you earn with minimum wage doesn’t amount to much. I know things really would have been hard without this scholarship. It means a great deal to me.”
