Science Discovery and Outdoor Learning Center

Being able to offer future teachers the chance to experience teaching techniques in an outdoor setting is an exciting proposition for the faculty of the College of Education and Educational Technology. Practicing those techniques with students from neighboring school districts makes it even better.

IUP’s Science Discovery and Outdoor Learning Center already has garnered several generous gifts. For example, the late William Feisley made a bequest in his will to support IUP’s elementary education programs, and a portion of that bequest eventually named the center’s pavilion in memory of his mother, Anna Young Feisley ’11.

While the entire center may be named for a gift of $100,000, the center requires numerous supplies and continuing capital touches, which are listed in the Dean’s Innovation Fund section for the College of Education.

Education Professor Megan Twiest, who has developed lesson plans that complement the outdoor learning center, said that providing educational components outdoors is an important part of ensuring that young students today appreciate what the environment. See more about Twiest’s efforts on IUP’s Research website.
