Pushing the Limit

Jackie Hynson

In her short time at IUP, scholarship recipient Jackie Hynson has already made her mark on the Crimson Hawk swimming program. As a sophomore in 2009, her first year at IUP, the Robert E. Cook Honors College student qualified for the NCAA Division II national meet and earned All-America honors.

Hynson, who transferred from Oakland (Mich.) University and is now a junior at IUP, competed in three events at the NCAA meet last March in Canton, Ohio, and finished in third place in both the 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly. She also took eleventh in the 100 butterfly and set school records in all three events.

Hynson, who is shown above, also received All-America honors from the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America.

Her achievements made Hynson, a resident of King George, Va., the first IUP women’s swimmer to become an All-American in an individual event since 2006. What she accomplished in the pool is made even more impressive by the fact that she also excelled in the classroom, receiving a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the 2009-10 academic year.

Hynson was successful academically and in the pool in her only season at Oakland and earned the highest grade point average on the women’s swimming team. But her desire to compete on the national level and to pursue her desired major of speech pathology led her to transfer to IUP. The opportunity to enroll in the prestigious Robert E. Cook Honors College program sealed the deal.

Hynson said,“The scholarship I receive at IUP has not only allowed me to study and swim here but also to train with an extra incentive to push past my limits in order to represent this institution to the best of my ability.”
