Note: Starting Fall 2009 semester Elkin will only house freshmen.

Elkin Hall

Part of the North Quad, Elkin Hall is a five-story building located along School Street near Oakland Avenue. More than three hundred men and women make Elkin Hall their home during the academic year.

  • Like all buildings on campus, Elkin Hall offers a smoke-free environment.
  • A portion of the first floor houses English majors.
  • The second floor is all male and houses our Safety Science majors.

Amenities in the building include:

  • A kitchenette with a microwave
  • Vending machines
  • Laundry room
  • Gameroom
  • Residential Computer Center
  • An air-conditioned lounge with a large screen television
  • Cable television service, internet connections, and local telephone service
  • Students must provide their own televisions, telephones, and/or computers

Elkin offers twenty-four-hour locked entrances.

Although rooms vary in size, the average room is 15' 7" × 11' 11" (188 square feet) with a window measuring 5' 0" × 5' 8" (w × h). The walls in Elkin are plaster with a height slightly over eight feet. The rooms are equipped with:

  • Two dressers
  • Closets
  • Desks, desk chairs, and shelves (for each student)
  • Two trash cans (one for recyclables and the other for regular trash)
  • The window has a pull-down shade and a curtain rod that requires drapery hooks to attach curtains; curtains are not provided

The two standard-size twin beds, desks, desk chairs, and dressers can be moved within the room; all other furniture is permanently fixed. The standard bunk bed arrangement is 19" from floor to the top of the lower mattress and 57" from the floor to the top of the upper mattress; this arrangement allows approximately eight inches of clearance under the lower mattress. Each closet has two sliding doors and is complete with two hooks and a clothing rod. Lighting is provided in the room via fluorescent lamps above the desks and overhead on the ceiling.

Elkin Room

Residents are encouraged to decorate their rooms; however, university-owned furniture cannot be removed from the room. Pictures and posters can be hung using poster putty only. Nails, bolts, tacks, glue, or other adhesives cannot be used to affix materials to the walls. Requests for painting must be approved in advance by the Residence Director. Students may not return prior to the official opening of the residence hall to paint their rooms.
