Eleanor Jean Anthony Scholarship (Application)
Eleanor Jean Anthony, a 1943 graduate of the Home Economics Education
Department at IUP, had a distinguished career in the U.S. Coast Guard during
World War II and taught Home Economics for twenty-five years.
Eligibility: Freshman Family and
Consumer Sciences Education (given priority) or Child and Family Studies major
with good high school GPA and high SAT score; statement of financial need;
and two (2) letters of reference from high school teachers. Awarded to one
freshman who will continue to receive the scholarship throughout four years as
long as qualifications are met.
Ella C. Bendix Scholarship (Application)
This scholarship is designated for students in Family and Consumer
Sciences Education with financial need. The scholarship recognizes individuals
of good character who demonstrate a commitment to the enhancement of family
life, and have shown potential for achieving his/her professional goals.
Eligibility: Full-time student in Child and Family Studies or Family and
Consumer Sciences Education, a 2.5 GPA, community and/or university
service, and financial need.
Family and Consumer Sciences Educational Alumni Scholarship (Application)
This scholarship was established by alumni from the Family and Consumer
Sciences Education major (formerly Home Economics Education) with the
Department of Human Development and Environmental Studies. The alumni wish
this scholarship to support students preparing to become teachers and who are
committed to the curriculum that teaches young people how to establish
productive and happy home and community lives for children and families.
Eligibility: Family and Consumer Sciences Education major (given priority); if no qualified
candidates, Child and Family Studies, Fashion Merchandising, and Interior
Design majors are eligible. Students must have a 3.0 GPA, demonstrate
community and university service, and have a statement of financial need.
Susan E. Finley Memorial Scholarship (Application)
Susan E. Finley graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1932 with a degree in Home Economics Education. Upon her death in 1997, she set up an endowed scholarship to help others achieve their educational goals.
Eligibility: Full-time sophomore or junior, Child and Family Studies or Family and
Consumer Sciences Education major with four or more semesters remaining
at IUP, a 3.0 GPA, and financial need.
Eleanor M. Gallati Scholarship (Application)
Eleanor M. Gallati, an IUP professor emeritus, along with her colleagues and friends established an educational scholarship upon her retirement in 1989 from the Home Economics Education Department. She joined the IUP faculty in 1957. It is her desire to assist students entering the fields of Child and Family Studies and Family and Consumer Sciences.
Eligibility: Full-time senior majoring in Child and Family Studies or Family and Consumer Sciences Education with a minimum 3.25 GPA, community and/or university service, and financial need.
M. Jane Segar Longenecker Scholarship (Application)
M. Jane Segar Longenecker, a member of the class of 1934, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education. In celebration of her
sixtieth reunion from Indiana State Teacher College, Dr. and Mrs. Herbert Longenecker established this scholarship.
Eligibility: Full-time junior or senior, Child and Family Studies or Family and Consumer Sciences Education major with two or more semesters remaining at IUP, a 3.5 GPA, community and/or university service, and financial need.
Helen Merriman Scholarship (Application)
This scholarship was established in honor of Helen Merriman, former faculty member in consumer services. The scholarship recognizes
individuals of good character who demonstrate a commitment to the enhancement of family life and have shown potential for achieving his/her professional goals.
Eligibility: Full-time student in Child and Family Studies or Family and
Consumer Sciences Education, a 2.5 GPA, community and/or university
service, and financial need.
Robert and Ruth O'Conner Scholarship (Application)
Robert and Ruth O’Connor established this scholarship in celebration of Mrs. O’Connor’s fiftieth class reunion from IUP. She graduated from the Home
Economics Education Department, taught Home Economics for eight years, and served as an Extension Agent for fourteen years.
Eligibility: Full-time student in Child and Family Studies or Family and Consumer Sciences Education, a 2.5
GPA, community and/or university service, and financial need.
Pittsburgh Home Economics Teachers Scholarship (Application)
The Pittsburgh Home Economics Club initiated this scholarship in 1980 for
deserving students in the Home Economics Education Department.
Eligibility: Family and
Consumer Sciences Education major (given priority); if no
qualified candidates, Child and Family Studies, Fashion
Merchandising, and Interior Design majors are eligible. Students must
have a 3.0 GPA, be a full-time senior (priority) or junior, be a graduate of Pittsburgh
Public Schools, and have a statement of financial need.
Opal Rhodes Scholarship (Application)
This scholarship was established in honor of Opal Rhodes,
former faculty member in home economics education. The scholarship recognizes individuals
of good character who demonstrate a commitment to the enhancement of family
life and have shown potential for achieving his/her professional goals.
Eligibility: Full-time student in Child and Family Studies or Family and
Consumer Sciences Education, a 2.5 GPA, community and/or university
service, and financial need.
Joan Schmitt Fashion Scholarship (Application)
Joan Schmitt, along with colleagues and friends, established this
scholarship upon her retirement in 2001 from the Human Development and
Environmental Studies Department where she served as a faculty member since
1975. This scholarship provides support to Fashion Merchandising students who have
strong academic achievements, financial need, and who work while attending
class full time.
Eligibility: Fashion
Merchandising major (must have earned 9 credits in FSMR from IUP)
with one or more semesters remaining at IUP, a 2.8 GPA, full-time student while
working ten hours per week, and demonstration of financial need.
Susan E. Shubra Scholarship (Application)
Family, friends, and colleagues established this scholarship to serve as a
living legacy to Susan Shubra’s brief yet meaningful life. She was a member of
the Consumer Services Department at the time of her death.
Eligibility: Fashion
Merchandising and Interior Design majors with one or more semesters
remaining at IUP and a 3.0 GPA; consideration is given to financial need.
Donna L. Streifthau Scholarship for Interior Design (Application)
Donna Streifthau, along with colleagues and friends, established this
scholarship upon her retirement in 1998 from the Human Development and
Environmental Studies Department, where she served as a faculty member in the
Interior Design program since 1972. She also served as chairperson of the
Consumer Services Department and later the combined departments of Home
Economics/Child Development, Family Relations, and Consumer Services, now
called Human Development and Environmental Studies. The scholarship
provides support to Interior Design students.
Eligibility: Full-time student
majoring in Interior Design. Awarded to a sophomore for use in their junior
year. The award will be given based on scholarship and service to the community
and/or the program beyond any service requirements associated with coursework.
Betty L. Wood Scholarship (Application)
Colleagues, friends, and family established the Betty L. Wood Scholarship in
honor of her retirement from the Consumer Services Department at IUP in
1992. The scholarship provides support for majors in Fashion Merchandising and
Interior Design.
Eligibility: Fashion
Merchandising and Interior Design majors with two or more semesters
remaining at IUP and a 3.0 GPA; consideration is given to financial need.
