Roberto was born in Washington, D.C., and was raised in Frederick, Maryland. His mother is originally from Peru and his father from El Salvador. Roberto graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2007 with a B.A. in Government and Politics. He was an active student leader on campus, serving as president of the Latino Student Union and editor-in-chief of La Voz Latina newspaper. Before graduating, he was honored with the Outstanding Latina/o Undergraduate Student Award from the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. After graduation, Roberto continued his work in the Latino and immigrant community in Maryland as a community organizer at CASA de Maryland, assistant director for the Hispanic College Fund HYI Summer Programs, and as a Youth development worker for Identity Inc. In the summer of 2010, Roberto decided to work as a volunteer community organizer for DREAMers in Maryland. Through his work, he has helped establish the Maryland DREAM Youth Committee, which has a mission to create a place for undocumented youth in Maryland and to provide them with educational opportunities. He hopes to bring this empowerment to documented and undocumented DREAMers in his state, the region he represents, and to all who want to join the DREAM movement.
