Special Highmark–Rite Aid Arrangement for Flu Shots

An annual flu shot is an important preventive health tool. This communication provides a brief overview of several different ways covered employees and their eligible dependents can obtain a flu shot.

Under a special one-year arrangement between Highmark and Rite Aid, adult members (over age eighteeen) of a Highmark PPO Plan will have the ability to obtain their flu shot at any Rite Aid pharmacy in Pennsylvania with no out-of-pocket cost. No appointment is required—the member simply presents their Highmark ID card, their eligibility will be electronically verified, and the pharmacist will administer the flu vaccine. Rite Aid will bill the Highmark health plan directly, there will be no member cost and no claim forms to file.

Alternatively, Highmark PPO members, as well as most individuals covered under other PASSHE/PEBTF health plans, can obtain a flu shot from their primary care physician. Members should verify their eligibility for this benefit with their health plan in advance and should contact their physician’s office to request an appointment. Some physician offices may charge an office visit co-pay for the flu vaccine administration.

Faculty members who are enrolled in the Highmark Comprehensive Major Medical Plan (Indemnity Plan) are subject to a schedule of benefits that does not include an annual flu vaccine. Those faculty members who are enrolled in the Pennsylvania Faculty Health and Welfare Fund may be eligible for a flu shot reimbursement of up to $30, for expenses not covered under the faculty members’ basic health plan (applicable to the faculty member only, does not apply to dependents). The fund will also reimburse eligible faculty members for the cost of pneumonia vaccinations. Faculty members should the PAFAC website for details regarding the fund’s influenza and pneumonia vaccinations plan and to download claim forms.
