Welcome from Luis Gonzalez, Dean of Libraries

As the new academic year 2013–2014 begins, I would like to welcome all new and returning students, faculty, and staff on behalf of the IUP Libraries.

Our libraries continue to move forward. Starting this semester, the main campus library will expand its weekend schedule by extending its Saturday hours (11:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.) and by opening earlier on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. instead of 1:00 p.m. In response to student requests, we are also in the planning stages of reconfiguring access to the first floor of the Stapleton building so that the building can stay open 24/5 (from 11:00 a.m. Sunday until 7:00 p.m. Friday evening). We expect construction efforts to create this 24-hour access zone to begin in October and to be completed in two to three weeks.

In addition, in response to requests from undergraduate and master’s programs students, we are opening some of our private study carrels on the second floor for undergraduate and masters’ program student use. Visit the Circulation Desk for more information about the use of these carrels.

For those of you new to IUP, our libraries offer local and remote access to resources which include over 280 electronic databases, more than 100,000 electronic books, and over 40,000 full-text professional journals and periodicals via our website. In addition, we house over 850,000 print monographs to help you through your studies, assignments, research needs, and academic careers. Our Interlibrary Loan Department is ready to provide you with access to materials that may not be available in our collections, and the librarians at the reference desk are ready to help you with all your information queries and needs.

Our best and most valuable resource is our staff and faculty, who stand eager and ready to assist you with your academic and research needs. Please do not hesitate to call on any of our faculty librarians or our professional staff when necessary. The IUP Libraries are committed to serving and assisting everyone within the university community in the timely completion of their academic work, research, and projects.

Comments and suggestions on how we are serving you and how we can do better are welcome! Help us make the IUP Libraries your libraries, where you come to do your homework, research, or just to enjoy some leisure time reading and relaxing. Please feel free to send me your questions and comments (you can reach me by e-mail at ljgonzal@iup.edu) or submit them through our Electronic Suggestion Box.
