Welcome from Luis Gonzalez, Dean of Libraries

On behalf of staff, faculty and administrators of the IUP Libraries, it is my pleasure to welcome the freshman class of 2012–13 and all our returning sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students, and IUP faculty to the new academic year.

For those of you who are returning to IUP, you will see that we have new furniture on the main floor of the Stapleton building (we gained 32 more new sitting spaces on the floor). In addition, we replaced all of the study chairs in the main library. Please join me in thanking Dr. Intemann, our provost, and Dr. Kilmarx, associate VP of Finances for Academic Affairs, for the new furniture.

Our resources include over 280 electronic databases and over 40,000 full-text professional journals and periodicals, which can be accessed locally at our buildings or remotely via the IUP Libraries website. We also offer over 750,000 print monographs and more than 90,000 electronic books available for your use. The Interlibrary Loan department is ready to provide you with materials that may not be available in our collections, and the librarians at the reference desk are ready to help you with all your information queries and needs.

Our best and most valuable resource is our staff and faculty who stand eager and ready to help you and assist you with your academic and research needs. Please do not hesitate to call on any of our faculty librarians or our professional staff when necessary. We are committed to serving and assisting you in the timely completion of your academic work, research, and projects.

New Services

Starting this semester, the IUP Writing Center is opening a satellite operation in the Stapleton Library building to offer writing tutoring services during evening hours. The satellite will be located in the southwest corner of the first floor of the Stapleton building. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. (the Writing Center Satellite will be closed on Fridays and Saturdays). This service will open on Tuesday, September 4, right after we return from Labor Day weekend.

We welcome your comments and suggestions on how we are doing and how we can do better. Help us make the IUP Libraries your libraries, where you come to do your homework, research, or just to enjoy some leisure time reading and relaxing. Please feel free to send me your questions and comments (you can reach me by e-mail at ljgonzal@iup.edu) or submit them through our Electronic Suggestion Box.
