Dawn Smith-Sherwood

Dr. Dawn Smith-Sherwood is an associate professor of Spanish in the Department of Foreign Languages.

She received her PhD in Spanish from the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY–Buffalo) in 2001.

During spring semester 2011, Dr. Smith-Sherwood enjoyed her first sabbatical and spent three months in Spain, residing with her family in the Poble Nou neighborhood of Barcelona, and then walking the 500-mile Camino de Santiago from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France, with a group of IUP students and Department of History colleague Dr. Caleb Finegan.

While in Spain, she also visited Madrid during the Día del Libro 2011 festivities, witnessing portions of the annual live reading of the Quijote at the Círculo de Bellas Artes; met with her favorite Spanish author, Clara Janés; and watched Barça defeat Real Madrid on their home field. ¡Visca Barça!

She is currently collaborating with Dr. Anne Pasero (Marquette University) on a collection of essays dedicated to the poetry and prose of Clara Janés.

At IUP, Dr. Smith-Sherwood teaches Intermediate Spanish, Introduction to Hispanic Literature, Twentieth/Twenty-First-Century Spanish Civilization and Culture, and the Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Spanish Novel.

She serves as faculty liaison to the Piso Cervantes, a Living-Learning Cluster located in the Global Awareness Community (Wallwork Hall) (Spanish Residential Living), as well as faculty advisor to the IUP Iota Mu Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society.
