Dr. Dawn Smith-Sherwood

Dawn Smith-Sherwood

Dawn Smith-Sherwood is associate professor of Spanish and assistant chair of the Department of Foreign Languages.

She received her PhD in Spanish from the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY–Buffalo) in 2001.

During spring semester 2011, Smith-Sherwood enjoyed her first sabbatical and spent three months in Spain, residing with her family in the Poble Nou neighborhood of Barcelona, and then walking the 500-mile Camino de Santiago from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France, with a group of IUP students and Department of History colleague Caleb Finegan. In May 2016 she returned to the Camino de Santiago for an abbreviated, 200-mile pilgrimage beginning in León with Finegan, Christine Baker (IUP History), and a group of 24 Honors College students from across the State System.

She is currently collaborating with Debra Faszer-McMahon (Seton Hill University) and Victoria Ketz (LaSalle University) on a collection of essays entitled Women and Science in Spanish Cultural Production. Additionally, she is contributing a chapter to a forthcoming volume dedicated to the works of Miguel de Unamuno in the Modern Language Association’s Approaches to Teaching series.

At IUP, Smith-Sherwood teaches Beginning and Intermediate Spanish, Introduction to Hispanic Literature, 20th/21st-Century Spanish Civilization and Culture, and the 19th- and 20th-Century Spanish Novel.

She serves as a faculty Living-Learning Partner to the Global Awareness Living-Learning Community of Wallwork Hall, home to the Spanish Language Cluster. In April 2016, she won the Center for Teaching Excellence Faculty Recognition Award for Living Learning.
