What will happen to my current Liberal Studies course?

All current Liberal Studies courses listed in the 2010–2011 Undergraduate Catalog on pages 37–40 will be grandfathered into the new curriculum, but will ultimately need to be revised as part of the phase-in plan.

What is the revision schedule for Liberal Studies courses?

There will be a three-year phase-in to revise Liberal Studies courses.

Academic Year 2011–2012, Year 1: Knowledge areas including: English Composition, Mathematics, Humanities, Fine Arts, Natural Science (both options), Social Science, and Health and Wellness

Academic Year 2012–2013, Year 2: Liberal Studies Electives

Academic Year 2013–2014, Year 3: Non-Western

Note: The following is a rough estimation of the dates for the review of the yearly course revisions:

  • September–October: Faculty and departmental committees revise and review proposals
  • November 1: Due at college curriculum committees
  • December 15: Due at LSC
  • March 1: Due at UWUCC, so that they can be available for the April Senate meeting

Will Writing Intensive (Writing-Across-the-Curriculum) courses have to be revised/reviewed?

All Writing-Across-the-Curriculum courses (Writing Intensive or W) and W professors will be reviewed as part of the new Liberal Studies curriculum revisions during the 2013–2014 academic year. The twenty-five-student limit in a W section is still recommended in the new curriculum.

Do I still need two Writing Intensive courses in the new curriculum?

Yes. You must still complete at least two writing-intensive courses. One of these must be in your major. The other may be in your major, outside your major, a free elective, or a Liberal Studies course.

Do departments/programs have to update their Undergraduate Catalog degree requirements?

Yes. Catalog listings of departmental/programmatic degree requirements will need to be revised for inclusion in the 2012–2013 Undergraduate Catalog. Note: We recommend that departments needing to replace the Liberal Studies credits (to return to 120 credit hours) initially add them to the free electives category, as some courses may no longer be offered or be in the same category after the phase-in period.

Do I have to switch to the new curriculum if I am currently a freshman, sophomore, or junior?

No. However, we encourage all current students (except seniors) to switch to the new curriculum. You will need to work closely with your advisor to work on your graduation plan to ensure that you have 120 credits.
