Smith

Dr. Jonathan B. “J.B.” Smith, professor of Kinesiology, Health, and Sport Science, has been a member of the IUP KHSS faculty since fall 1997. He received his doctorate in Sports Management from Temple University in 1994, focusing his research on the motivational makeup of aquatic professionals. He received his MS from the University of Nebraska–Omaha in 1986 and his BS from IUP in 1982, both times majoring in Health and Physical Education/Teacher Education. He completed postdoctoral study at Pennsylvania State University in 1997 in Education Administration, receiving his Pennsylvania Secondary Principal Certification in the process.

Dr. Smith is currently the IUP chapter president of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. For over five years, he has been a member of the IUP APSCUF Executive Committee as legislative chair, and an elected delegate to the APSCUF Legislative Assembly. He is a past chair of ACPAC (the Academic Computing Policy Advisory Committee) and the IUP University Senate. He has hosted dozens of large-scale (300-plus participants minimum), multi-team swimming competitions over the past two decades. He is a PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) master scuba diver trainer; NSPF (National Swimming Pool Foundation) CPO instructor; and NFHSAA and NCAA swimming official, and he holds numerous Red Cross certifications. He has special interest in using technology, webpage production, and the Internet as it relates to all aspects of health, physical education, and aquatics.

In the spring 2009 semester, Dr. Smith was the recipient of the IUP University-Wide Distinguished Faculty Award for Service, and he is a past recipient of the Innovative Use of Technology Award, presented by the Instructional Design Center.

Dr. Smith has authored the publication Hot Water and Healthy Living—The Science of Hot-Water Immersion: How It Promotes Healthy Bodies, Hearts, Minds, and Lifestyles, released in March 2008, for the National Swimming Pool Foundation. This consumer-centered book focuses on positive medicinal influences that can be provided by immersion in warm/hot water environments. At last count, over 30,000 copies of this publication have been sold worldwide.

Before his appointment at IUP, he was a member of the faculty at the Perkiomen Valley High School in Collegeville, Pa., for nine years (1988–1997), serving as a classroom teacher for grades five and eight through twelve in the disciplines of health, physical education, and aquatics while serving as aquatics director and coaching swimming, diving, and water polo. Before his PVHS employment, he served two different YMCAs (Sidney-Shelby County, Ohio, and Lansdowne, Pa.) as aquatics director/swim coach for a total of four years. He also spent eight summers (1989–1996) as pool director/swim coach at the Germantown Cricket Club in Philadelphia.
