Responsibilities/Achievements:

Dr. Sloniger holds the position of associate professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Sloniger provides unique service learning opportunities for his students, including functional fitness testing for older adults in the local community.

He has been recognized as an American College of Sports Medicine Fellow as a result of his research accomplishments and service to the college.

Dr. Sloniger was elected and served as a board member for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine. Most recently, he was elected and served as president of this chapter which is composed of sports medicine professionals and students from New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, and New Jersey.

Dr. Sloniger maintains memberships within the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He is certified by NSCA as a strength and conditioning specialist and has hosted NSCA certification exams at IUP on a regular basis.

He serves the Health and Physical Education Department through his work on a number of committees. Currently, Dr. Sloniger serves as chair for the departmental Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects and Promotion/Sabbatical Committees. In addition, Dr. Sloniger is the codirector of the Center for Health Promotion and Cardiac Disease Prevention.

Research:

His research interests currently include sport participation by older adults and strength and conditioning issues.

He continued his education as a postdoctoral NIH Research Training Fellow at Duke University Medical Center. During his postdoctoral experience, Dr. Sloniger’s research was related to the responses of older adults and heart failure patients to exercise.
