Dr. Madeline Paternostro Bayles

Dr. Madeline Paternostro Bayles is an associate professor in the Exercise Science program. She holds a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology from Adelphi University.  Her Bachelor of Science degree is in Cardiorespiratory Science from SUNY at Stony Brook. Dr. Bayles serves as co-coordinator of the department’s Master of Science in Sport Science program. She currently is a member and fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR).

Dr. Bayles instructs courses in the undergraduate Exercise Science program as well as the graduate program in Sport Studies, Exercise Physiology, program. Her primary instructional interests are in the areas of exercise physiology, exercise prescription, exercise electrocardiography, and health fitness instruction. For the graduate program, Dr. Bayles instructs Physical Activity Epidemiology, Current Literature in Health Fitness and Sport, and Exercise Prescription for Chronic Disease.

Dr. Bayles serves as the program coordinator for the CAAHEP-accredited undergraduate exercise science program as well as the internship coordinator for exercise science graduate and undergraduate students.

Professional experiences include fourteen years as a director of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation for several tertiary care hospitals, including Allegheny General Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She has also served as a research associate in behavioral weight loss programs for the UPMC-Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.

Dr. Bayles has been involved in a variety of activities at both the state and national levels in the area of clinical/fitness certifications. She serves as a workshop director for the ACSM’s Health Fitness Instructor certification and a lecturer for the Exercise Specialist certification. She has been involved in the regional chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine in a variety of roles, serving as its president in 1992. For the ACSM, she has served on the Exercise Specialist and Health Fitness Instructor subcommittees, and she served on the steering committee that developed the ACSM’s Personal Trainer Certification. Currently, she serves on the Executive Committee for the ACSM’s Committee on Certification and Registry Board. Her term as chair of the CCRB extends from May 2008 to 2011.

Research interests are in the area of chronic disease, particularly Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and safety issues in physical activity. She has presented at numerous national and regional conferences including ACSM, AACVPR, and MARC-ACSM. She has edited several publications including the ACSM’s Resource Manual for Exercise Testing and Prescription and ACSM’s Resources for the Personal Trainer. She has served as a major advisor for numerous master’s thesis and undergraduate student research projects.
