Richard Hsiao, M.S., M.B.A., Ph.D., is an associate professor for the Sport Administration program and director of the James G. Mill Center for Health and Fitness. Dr. Hsiao received his doctorate in Sport Administration from Florida State University. He also holds master’s degrees in Exercise Science and Business Administration from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Before he came to IUP, he taught sport law, sport marketing, and lifetime activity courses at Florida State University for four years.
Dr. Hsiao’s major teaching responsibilities include graduate and undergraduate sport management core courses and elective courses, which include HPED 652 Sport Business, HPED 635 Sport Management, HPED 641 Administration of Aquatic Programs, HPED 642 Design and Operation of Aquatic Facilities, HPED 292 Introduction to Sport Management, HPED 445 Business Practices in Sport, HPED 460 Legal Issues in Sport, and HPED 143 Health and Wellness. Dr. Hsiao delivers several of the above courses through distance education during the Summer semesters. He has also taught Sport Marketing and Sport Business for IUP’s Study Abroad program in Oxford, England, during the summer.
Dr. Hsiao’s primary areas of research interest are risk management and law issues in sport and the marketing of sport enterprises and service industries. His research has focused primarily on the applications of risk-management implementation and development of a risk-management model for sport organizations and facility operation.
Dr. Hsiao’s marketing interest is in the the impact of strategic brand image management in international sports events and the globalization effects related to the sport business industry. He has presented at more than thirty-five national and international professional conferences. He writes regularly, and his published work includes articles in the Journal of Recreation and Leisure, International Journal of Aquatic Education and Research, Sport and Leisure Management International Report, and Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport.
