Sharon Deutschlander is an assistant professor and coordinator of the undergraduate teacher education program for Health and Physical Education. Dr. Deutschlander received her Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education from Lock Haven University and her Master of Science degree from Pennsylvania State University in Health Education. She received her doctorate in Administration and Leadership Studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
She is a Pennsylvania certified teacher and a current member of the national and state Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. She is an author for a middle school textbook series, Decisions for Health, 2004 and 2007 editions. Dr. Deutschlander is the project director for the Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs Grant for Armstrong and Indiana counties. She is a certified technical assistance provider for Pennsylvania schools and is certified in crisis intervention for schools and communities. Dr. Deutschlander has presented at local, state, and national conferences on a variety of health topics. She has published articles and books and is a reviewer for Holt, Rinehart, and Winston publishing company.
Dr. Deutschlander teaches two graduate courses, HPED 655, Health and Fitness for Elementary Aged Children, and HPED 645, Advanced Teaching Techniques in Physical Education. Her undergraduate classes include EDUC 242 (Pre-Student Teaching Clinical I), EDUC 342 (Pre-Student Teaching Clinical II), HPED 217 (Teaching Middle School Physical Education), HPED 316 (Teaching Elementary Health Education), EDUC 421 (Student Teaching I), and EDUC 441 (Student Teaching II).
Dr. Deutschlander has served on several committees including Liberal Studies, Senate Fellowship, Library, Doctoral Program Advisory, Graduate Curriculum, Undergraduate Curriculum, Teacher Education Curriculum, Teacher Education Coordinators Council, Institutional Review Board, College Research, Pedagogy, Pedagogy Search, and the Teaching Academy.
Before taking a full-time faculty position at IUP, Dr. Deutschlander served as the executive director of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, Inc., and was responsible for drug and alcohol inpatient, outpatient, and prevention programs in a three-county area. She taught Health and Physical Education in the public schools for several years and also taught in the Chemical Dependency Certification Program for Pennsylvania State University.
