Aliases and Campaign URLs

URLs (web addresses) on the IUP site contain the page’s ID number, along with several other pieces of information. When directing outside traffic to a page within the site, or when the URL appears in print, it is sometimes easier to give the page a “friendly” URL. This can be accomplished through aliases, campaign URLs, and QR codes.

Aliases

An alias, or different name for a URL, creates a new name for a page. For example, instead of giving potential students the link “www.iup.edu/page.aspx?id=24412” to get to the admissions page, the alias “www.iup.edu/admissions” is created. It is short, clear, and easy to remember, and it takes potential students to the same page as the long URL.

Because each alias has to be created and maintained by hand by the Web Team, aliases cannot be generated for every page on your site. We restrict these to main pages and pages whose URLs need to appear in print. (See also Campaign URLs, which might be more appropriate for print.)

Requesting an Alias

To have an alias added to a webpage, please file an ihelp ticket.

Note: Once an alias is defined, the old URL will still work. But, don’t promote that one—always use the alias.

Campaign URLs

Campaign URLs are created when the traffic to a specific page needs to be tracked, or when traffic to an existing page needs to be rerouted.

One example is tracking website visits from a print campaign. When a postcard mailing is sent out, it can include a link to a corresponding page on the site. As a way to measure the success of the mailing, a unique campaign URL is created and used on that postcard. The campaign URL can track how many visitors came to that page as a result of the mailing, as they would be the only ones given that specific URL.

They way campaign URLs work is through a redirect. The URL that is created acts as a step in getting visitors to the right information. Each time visitors come to that “step,” they are counted and directed to the appropriate page.

Campaign URLs are used for a set period of time and then removed from the system. For the postcard example, the campaign URL would be active for only a few months, to correspond with the duration of the postcard campaign.

Quick Response Codes

Quick response codes, or QR codes, are bar codes that can be scanned and read by most camera phones and dedicated QR readers. The code can contain a variety of data, such as text, contact information through a Vcard, and links to websites. QR codes are, as the name suggests, a quick way to connect someone to your information.

QR codes can be effective ways to promote material and offer an opportunity to track the visits to your site from the QR code. If you are considering using a QR code as part of a campaign, please contact the Web Team to have a unique campaign URL created. This will allow you to track the visits generated by the QR code.
