American Society of Safety Engineers, IUP Chapter

The American Society of Safety Engineers was founded in 1911. The oldest professional safety organization in the United States, ASSE has 140 chapters nationwide and 54 student sections within eight regions. Chapters offer localized membership services and networking and professional development opportunities through seminars, conferences, meetings, and newsletters. Through its ten divisions, ASSE offers professional development opportunities and technical assistance in various career paths. These divisions are Construction, Consultants, Engineering, Environmental, Healthcare, Management, Public Sector, Risk Management/Insurance, Transportation, and International. Visit the ASSE website at www.asse.org.

The Safety Sciences Department has had a student chapter of the ASSE for more than twenty years and has won the Outstanding ASSE Student Section five times during that time period. All students are encouraged to participate, and approximately a hundred students currently are involved. The chapter sponsors monthly meetings where safety and health professionals speak to the group about a variety of safety and health issues. In addition, this chapter also completes a variety of community services, including a CPR Day and a School Bus Safety Training Program for local elementary schools
