In addition to meeting IUP’s general graduate admissions requirements, candidates to the M.A. Generalist program should be aware of the following:

  • Candidates are expected to have at least a 2.5 overall GPA. But, if your GPA is below a 3.0, we recommend that you also submit a critical writing sample (normally an essay of ten to twenty pages written for an upper-level English course or an excerpt from a senior thesis).
  • Candidates are not required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), but may submit it to bolster their applications.
  • Candidates with strong academic records, but with backgrounds in other disciplines, should contact for advisement prior to applying.

Priority Review will be given to applications received by the following deadlines:

  • For Fall semester: April 15
  • For Spring semester: September 15
  • For Summer semester: February 15

Adherence to these deadlines will ensure that accepted students are able to register with continuing graduate students in the program.
