Our Orientation programs were established to support your transition to being an IUP student. Proper advising and appropriate course selection is critical to first-year success. You will be placement tested, learn, meet other new students, work with peer advisers, and have fun!
As an entering Indiana Campus freshman, you may select between a weekend Spring Orientation (when available), or a two-day, residential Summer Orientation. You only need to attend one Spring Orientation or one Summer Orientation. Each session can reach capacity at any time.
As an entering Indiana Campus freshman, you may select between a weekend spring orientation (when available), or a two-day, residential summer Orientation. You only need to attend one Spring Orientation or one Summer Orientation. Each session can reach capacity at any time.
Spring orientation replaces attendance at our residential summer Orientation program. Spring Orientation is nonresidential (students commute from home or make their own reservations at local hotels). Spring Orientations run from 8:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m. Saturday and from 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Summer Orientation occurs on weekdays during late May through mid-July. The summer programs on the Indiana campus are residential (even for fall commuters) for everyone but married students or students who are parents. Summer Orientation programs run from 7:00 a.m. the first day through 5:00 p.m. the second day, including evening and overnight, so please plan accordingly (with the exception of July 28-29 which runs on a modified schedule).
Plan to attend one of the two Honors College designated dates:
You will see your “designated” Orientation date on the Orientation enrollment form as June 16–17. If you wish to attend the April 9–10 program, select it from the Alternate Dates.
Note: If you cannot attend either of the Honors College designated dates, you may select any of the above available Indiana Campus freshman dates.
Plan to attend one of the two Punxsutawney Campus designated dates:
Note: If this is a problem, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org (preferred) or 724-357-4067.
Plan to attend one of the Northpointe Campus only designated dates. Northpointe Campus orientations are one-day summer orientations, held at the Northpointe Campus.
During Orientation, students will take the following exams:
Reading. These tests are serious and determine course placement. You should prepare for them. Depending on the major, students may also take the
French, or German exams. Incoming freshmen have the opportunity to submit an English Portfolio, in place of taking the English Essay Exam.
Carefully read materials about
English Placement (please note, Honors College admits only do not take the English placement test or submit a portfolio). Please note, if you change your orientation date and have submitted a portfolio, please contact
Be sure that you (and/or your family's) hotel arrangements are available for Saturday night. If you are driving a long distance, you may want to consider staying Friday night as well.
Student participants stay (separate from family members) in mandatory overnight housing in an IUP residence hall during the program.
While there is no formal program the night before Orientation, you may want to consider spending the night in the residence hall so that you are well-rested for the program and testing. This is not an option for the July 28-29 orientation. (There is a $24 residence hall fee for arriving early, which will be added to the Orientation fee on your semester bill.) If you wish this option, indicate this on the enrollment form. (Early arrival breakfast in the IUP dining hall will be approximately $7, payable by cash, debit, or credit.)
As a commuter, no overnight arrangements are necessary.
If you absolutely must change your Orientation date, log back into
MyIUP and select “reschedule my orientation date if needed.”
In addition to having noted any prior college coursework on the Orientation enrollment form, if you have AP, CLEP, or transfer credits, be sure to submit any official transcript to the IUP Office of Admissions, 117 Sutton Hall, 1011 South Drive, Indiana, PA 15705, well in advance of your selected Orientation date. (See
FAQ for more information.)
Your Orientation confirmation will arrive approximately one week before your program date. The information will include arrival procedures, program times, a campus map, a parking permit, and information on sample tests. (Note that letters for last-minute date changes and/or last-minute enrollments may be difficult to provide.)
Questions may be directed to
