IUP Orientation Process

  • Step 1
    Understand what Orientation is

Our Orientation programs were established to support your transition to being an IUP student. Proper advising and appropriate course selection is critical to first-year success. You will be placement tested, learn about IUP, meet other new students, work with peer advisers, and have fun!

    Step 2
Know that participation in IUP Orientation and placement testing is Mandatory

    Step 3
Figure out when Orientation is and choose a date according to your admission category

    Step 4
    Understand Placement Testing

During Orientation, students will take the following exams: English, Math, and Reading. These tests are serious and determine course placement. You should prepare for them. Depending on the major, students may also take the Education Readiness, Spanish, French, or German exams. Incoming freshmen have the opportunity to submit an English Portfolio, in place of taking the English Essay Exam.

Carefully read materials about English Placement (please note, Honors College admits only do not take the English placement test or submit a portfolio). Please note, if you change your orientation date and have submitted a portfolio, please contact orientation-testing@iup.edu.

    Step 5
    Make Overnight Arrangements

    January Orientation

There will be no need to make overnight arrangements for this orientation. You will be moving into your residence hall before the start of orientation on Wednesday, January 18, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

    Spring Orientation (April dates)

Be sure that your (and/or your family's) hotel arrangements are available for Saturday night.

    Summer Orientation

Student participants stay (separate from family members) in mandatory overnight housing in an IUP residence hall during the program.

    Step 6
    Register for Orientation on MyIUP

    Step 7
What to do if your date plans change

If you absolutely must change your Orientation date, log back into MyIUP and select “reschedule my orientation date if needed.”  (January has only one date so you will not be able to reschedule it.)

    Step 8
Send IUP Admissions your AP and/or transfer credits before Orientation

In addition to having noted any prior college coursework on the Orientation enrollment form, if you have AP, CLEP, or transfer credits, be sure to submit any official transcript to the IUP Office of Admissions, 117 Sutton Hall, 1011 South Drive, Indiana, PA 15705, well in advance of your selected Orientation date. (See FAQ for more information.)

    Step 9
    Your Orientation Confirmation

Your Orientation confirmation will arrive approximately one week before your program date. The information will include arrival procedures, program times, a campus map, a parking permit, and information on sample tests. (Note that letters for last-minute date changes and/or last-minute enrollments may be difficult to provide.)
