Hola! If you are available on Tuesdays at 7 pm and you are interested in becoming apart of the Latino Student Organization, then please stop by. We meet at the Humanities building (HSS) room 125. Everyone is always welcomed. If you are passionate about and/or concerned with issues that minorities face in today's society, then I urge you to come and see what we are about! If there are things that anyone personally would like to explore or if you have any ideas for events on campus that you would like to see held, bring those ideas with you. We are all open ears. Thank you in advance.

Bridging Educational Systems across the Globe

Wallwork G-98

The Office of International Education and the College of Education and Educational Technology are currently hosting 16 Fellows through the International Leader in Education Program (ILEP). This Department of State-funded and IREX- managed program allows these secondary teachers to observe and teach at Indiana High School and Brashear High School in Pittsburgh. In addition, the educators take specially designed education and technology courses at IUP in preparation to create Professional Development Modules that will help their school districts back home. Representing Malaysia, India, the Philippines, Senegal, Morocco, Brazil and Kenya, each educator will be able to bring a unique viewpoint to our community.

In addition to learning a great deal about American education and culture, the Fellows have also had an extraordinary impact on the community. Dr. Scott Layden, a mathematics teacher at Indiana High School says, “I have enjoyed learning about Kenya’s culture and educational system. The students really appreciated having the Fellow with us.” The program is truly an enriching experience for all the teachers, students, and also the International Friendship Families who volunteer to take the Fellows to cultural and civic activities.

Jessica Mulvihill hosts one of the Moroccan Fellows. She says, “Being a host has been exciting for my family. My kids enjoy interacting with someone from a different culture. But in spite of all the differences we realize we are more similar than you would have thought.”

The Fellows will share information with the IUP community about their cultures, and also their educational systems. You are invited to Wallwork G-98 on Wednesday, March 29 at 7 pm to speak with this amazing group of teachers. The evening will include country presentations, a Q&A discussion, and also some light refreshments. Hope to see you there!

The goal of “Straight Outta this Country: A look at education from around the world” is to explore various educational systems worldwide through the first-hand experiences of professors in the International Leaders in Education Program here at IUP.  Each of the professors will give a short presentation about education in their country, which will be followed by an open discussion and question and answer session.  We welcome you to come out for an eye-opening experience and light refreshments will be provided.   An Ice Cream social will be held before the professors begin their presentations for any students wishing to interact with the professors in a social setting.

If you have any questions, please contact Li Teng (teng@iup.edu) or Tracy Anderson (tracya@iup.edu)
